JS Convocation

Justice Studies Spring 2013 Convocation

 

Grad1 Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013 from 
2:00pm -4:00pm California Theatre, 345 S. 1st Street, San José, California.  The doors will open for the lobby at 12:00pm and seating will begin at 12:30pm. If you would like to participate in our department convocation ceremony and/or you wish to purchase tickets, please complete the ticket request form.

Participation

Only students who have applied for graduation for Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 may participate in the convocation ceremony.  As a participant, you are expected to be at California Theater by 12:00pm for a group picture, and individual pictures if you wish to take them.  *Location and time for the group shot may change.

Give a “shout out” to your friends, family and loved ones.  Also, let us know your post-graduation plans.  Please complete this form.

Cost

The cost to participate as a student of our department is free to you, however any guests that you wish to invite must purchase a ticket.  A ticket costs $20* each for all guests including children older than 2 years.

Student completes online form and needs to pick up the tickets from the main office.  We can only accept money orders or cashier checks made out to “SJSU Justice Studies” in our department office.  You may now purchase tickets online by visiting the Justice Studies Convocation Store with your credit/debit card.

Tickets are “first come, first serve” and there is no limit to the number of tickets each student can purchase.  Tickets will remain on sale until we are sold out.  All tickets sales are final.  We DO NOT issue refunds or credits for any reason.

* All funds collected from ticket sales are used to pay for the entire event.  Any difference in funds after expenses will be used for the continued support of the educational mission and faculty/staff development of the Justice Studies Department. 


Parking

There are various parking lots in the area to choose from.  We suggest using parking lots that are owned by the City of San Jose, however the some parking lots may better suit your guests.  As a student, you may wish to park at the University and walk over to the Theater since most students already pay for parking.  You can visit the interactive San Jose Downtown parking map http://sjdowntownparking.com/parking-map.  Here is a list of parking lots around the California Theater:

    Southwest corner of San Carlos and S. 2nd Street

    Daily Rate: $6.00 flat rate
  • South Hall Lot
    435 S. Market Street at Viola Street
    (Entrance on  Market Street)
    Daily Rate: $7.00 flat fee
  • First & San Salvador Lot
    401 S. 1st Street
    (Entrance on San Salvador Street)
    Daily Rate: Unknown

Guest Seating and Theater Etiquette

Seating will begin an hour and a half before the ceremony begins (12:30pm). Tickets are general admission style and have no assigned seats.  You may sit anywhere you choose.  If your family and friends bring balloons, they will be asked to leave them in the lobby of the California Theater. Balloons are not allowed in the Theater. Please ask friends and family to refrain from using any noise-making devices because of the echo in the Theater, which may agitate others with sensitive ears and/or hearing devices.

Due to fire code regulations, strollers are not allowed inside of the Theater and cannot be in the aisle ways.  All children require tickets that are older than 2 years.


Regalia

The Spartan Bookstore Graduation Center opens April 9. Purchase your bachelor’s regalia (cap, gown, tassel) for $45.98 and master’s regalia (cap, gown, hood & tassel) for $80.96; to ensure stock availability, please purchase before April 30 (call 408-924-1828).

To be sure you get the proper color and size (Regalia Page for Commencement), you should make your purchase as early as possible. To purchase your regalia, you must know:

  1. what degree you will receive (bachelor’s of science or master’s of science);
  2. the name of the department (Justice Studies) and the college (Applied Sciences and Arts) for your major field of study (Justice Studies; Forensic Science, Concentration in Biology/Chemistry)
  3. your height, to properly size your gown.

In addition, graduation announcements, class rings, diploma frames and other keepsakes of your accomplishments will be available in the Graduation Center.

Pictures

Justice Studies has hired John Medina Photography to take our group picture as well as individual snapshots before the ceremony and when you cross the stage. You MUST be here for the group shot even if you do not purchase photos. The photographer will take picture payments at the convocation ceremony or you may contact him by phone to purchase photos at (408) 807-1579. Our department will email you the link to view and purchase your photos. You may purchase them by cash or check.  Package costs are available on the day of the ceremony.


Flowers

Rosies & Posies Downtown is our exclusive florist of choice since they make all of our department arrangements. If you wish to pre-order, please call 408-293-3773 or you can visit Rosies & Posies Downtown website. Be sure to let them know that you are ordering for the Justice Studies Department convocation ceremony.  It may even be possible to pick up the flowers at the California Theater however more information about this will follow once closer to the ceremony.
